How can I import groups from Azure ?

You can import groups from Azure to Hector from the Settings section of the application. You must be an administrator to do so. Hector uses a method called /memberof from Microsoft Graph in order to get all the groups that a user belongs to.

There are four groups that can be imported and filtered from Azure. You can find more information in the following link: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/graph/api/resources/groups-overview?view=graph-rest-1.0.

In order to have more control over the groups that you want to see in Hector, you can choose which groups will be filtered during the initial import.

  • Microsoft 365 : Allows you to get groups with the type “Unified”, which are collaborative groups in Office 365.
  • Security : Allows you to get “Security” group types.
  • MailEnabled : Allow you to get “Mail Enabled Security” group types.

If you wish to only get groups of type “Security”, you will check the Security checkbox.

Once the import is completed, you’ll notice that none of the groups have been set as Official. This prevents Hector from suddenly displaying hundreds of groups in the different menus in the application until you’ve had time to curate the groups.

We recommend you create your groups manually that will be used throughout the application and associate the imported groups to these manually created groups.

  • From the “Settings/Groups” section, create a new group by clicking on “New”. After naming your group, click on the “Group Is Official” checkbox and hit save.
  • Now navigate to one of your imported groups and select the official group from the alias section. This will link the two groups together, and any time users are imported, they will automatically be assigned to the official group.
  • When going through the import process, make sure all your groups have been set as official, or an alias of another group..

No matter the number of groups you’ve retrieved from Azure, your menus will remain light weight without extra groups from Azure. It is import to note that you can also choose to make imported groups from Azure as official groups in the application. It is not a requirement that only manually created groups are to be set as official.
